Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Children of a Lesser God (1986)

Directed by Randa Haines

Starring William Hurt, Marlee Matlin, Piper Laurie, Philip Bosco

Author

Fantastic story, fantastic performances by both Hurt and Matlin. He’s so stoic, and he’s got great eyes. Hurt plays emotionally deep characters with ease. I bet the role was a real challenge for him, wonder if he had to learn to sign. His translation voice-over works well. Why no Oscar consideration? And what a debut for Matlin. She’s cute and lovable. She deserved the Oscar. I wish everyone was as forthright and well-spoken as they are in the movies.

A beautiful film, I almost lost if when the deaf girl put music on for him. Several moments of viewer and character reflection. Wasn’t quite ready for it to end when and where it did.

Deaf people rehearsing the dance routine for the stage performance is one thing, but dancing around aimlessly at the party, frolicing and screaming, is anohter. What happened with that one kid in calasss who wouldn’t talk?

Nice airy, woodwinds and synth score, like Field of Dreams and Captive.
