Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Directed by Matt Reeves

Starring Angela Kerecz, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer, Keri Russell

Author

The story feels long and thorough, but it’s mostly a deep exploration of human-human politics, ape-ape politics, and human-ape politics. Not a whole lot really happens, and that’s what makes things feel a bit slow.

Clarke was good as Malcolm despite not being a familiar face. Oldman played a nice supporting role.

Effects are great, especially the close-ups. They really nailed the facial expressions, especially on Koba, Blue Eyes, and Maurice. Loved the last shot. The score and instrumentation was reminiscent of Goldsmith’s avant garde work in the original film. Let’s hear more of that.

They’re really stretching out the Planet of the Apes mythos with this new series. At this pace, they could easily make 4-5 more movies.
