Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Isle of Dogs (2018)

Directed by Wes Anderson

Starring Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban

Author

Definitely Wes Anderson, with the symmetry and the quirky humor and displaced flashbacks and nostalgic songs and satire of all things formal.

Anderson’s really got full control over the visuals here, and every frame is symmetrical, shot from a flat 90 degrees, beautiful, and quirky, with extra fun animating the animated sequences shown on TV screens. Comedy is subtle and offbeat, with extra humor derived from translations and subtitles.

Lots of familiar voices. Amazing how he can keep getting Bill Murray on his projects.

Very Japanese in style, themes, subject matter, references. The sushi sequence was particularly interesting and beautiful.

But it’s all a little boring, unfortunately.
