Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

Directed by Richard Donner

Starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo

Author

Cartoonish and unrealistic at times. Overall, the action and stunts are pretty good, but I didn’t like the way they tried to mix comedy with action. All that does is make the action seem unimportant and silly. It worked for True Lies because that film revels in over-the-topness like Bond films do.

I didn’t like the way they tried to force style with the sax. And I didn’t like the wall-to-wall bickering either. It seems forced and unrealistic, like they tried to cram as many words into the scene as possible. The last action sequence was fantastic, exciting and well-shot, great set-up and great delivery.

Jet Li made the film. He stole the show and was a real crowd-pleaser. A true bad-ass. Great look, great moves, and a great introduction into American cinema. I liked the added dimension to Leo. After all these years, the annoying little flake turns out to have a heart.

The end credits with the production stills and behind-the-scenes shots mixed together was a neat way to acknowledge the film as fiction and establish a history to the series. A great way to end it all.
