Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Miller’s Crossing (1990)

Directed by Joel Coen

Starring Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden

Author

Obviously modelled after the noir gangster films of the 40’s, with 90’s gore. It kinda felt like a Cohn film (strong characters, violin and flute music which sounded a lot like Fargo, photography of nature, photography with subtle comedy), but it was awfully boring. Cohn films are usually refreshingly and interestingly slow, but this one wasn’t very interesting. The whole film was one long conversation (often about characters we don’t see or know), with people talking and not much really happening. I can understand how it might get better with each successive viewing, but to me that’s not what movies are about.

The two shootout scenes were great, but I just don’t know about the rest. What’s with the hat motif? I just don’t get it. And how come Byrne looks so good even though he is beat up in every other scene?

Byrne just doesn’t do anything for me. It just didn’t seem like he did much acting. And he’s not much to look at, either. Finney and Turturro are good. Turturro’s got a great voice. The Caspar character looked like a white Charles Barkley. As usual for a Cohn film, bit parts for Buscemi and McDormand. And the kid reminded me of Stilwell from A League of Their Own.
