Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

North By Northwest (1959)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis

Author

One of Hitchcock’s best. Interesting story, and Grant has got the lines. Saint was the old Christina Applegate. Hitchcock’s penchant for English talent means that too many of the characters in this American film have accents.

The most interesting thing about this movie, I think, is that it bridges the old and the new in so many ways. First, the story really moves, both plot-wise and in physical space. That alone is one of the biggest things that separates new from old. The plot was pretty complicated, the sexuality a bit risque (surprised to see a topless Grant). The characters are a bit edgier, the acting is looser and more comfortable. Effective use of color, lots of very natural (or at least very natural-looking) outdoor and location photography. Surprisingly good action sequences, quick editing. And a score used in a modern way, less as mood music and more coordinated with the action, and with more modern instrumentation. I can’t think of any movie before this which made this many advances.

Loved the ending shot! Not sure I get the title.
