Prisoners (2013)

Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo

Author

A refreshingly classic, simple thriller, solidly executed by Villeneuve. The story is nicely paced, if not a bit slow at times. The ending is seemingly abrupt, but it works perfectly.

Jackman and Gyllenhaal are both great. Jackman is very ferocious but very vulverable and human, refreshing to see after years as Wolverine. Even Gyllenhaal’s tic kind of worked. Would have liked to learn a little bit more about his character, though. Loki seemed to exist only to move the story forward. Dramatically, it would have been nice if there was more at stake for him than his perfect record at work. Dano is also good in his creepy role.

Newspapers are actually used in scenes to reveal plot points move the story forward. Who under 60 still reads newspapers? Or maybe the story was set in the early 90’s? Just seems a bit awkward these days.

Why the title? Wasn’t there really only one prisoner? Or are the children prisoners? Or is Keller a metaphorical prisoner? Or is it all of the above?
