Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Ransom (1996)

Directed by Ron Howard

Starring Mel Gibson, Gary Sinise, Rene Russo, Brawley Nolte

Author

Pretty good. Gibson turns in his regular good strainy-veiny necked performance, and so does everyone else. The story is pretty good and has some interesting plot twists. It almost seems like it’s from a book. But I prefer simpler, more visual plots. It’s incredible how many close-ups they use in this and all other new movies. Every shot, whether of a person or an object, is a super-close-up. It’s kinda gay.

What’s with that color-to-black and white, grainy, slow motion sequence at the end? I mean, it’s cool-looking, but is there an artistic point to it?

I’ve always found Ron Howard’s films to be kind of plain. Well-made, but plain. They’re the equivalent of speaking clearly without making a point.
