Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

Directed by George Lucas

Starring Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee

Author

The movie’s nice and long, bridging the other movies more effectively than any of the others. It makes other movies better as it does the most to connect them all and make characters in the other stories more complete (this is what I feel is one of the greatest problems with the series).

Less silliness, more heart and emotion than the first one. Little bit of adult humor is nice to see in Lucas’ work.

The action is superb, best of all the movies, chase scenes are great, and it’s violent! Lots of decapitations = good. I just wish that they had actors (or even extras) who were the slightest bit athletic. It would make those light sabre duels so much more exciting (remember Darth Maul?). And the effects are nearly flawless, more integrated (i.e. less establishing shots and details, more integration with characters), more detailed (Yoda is perfect). The aliens of Camino looked exactly like the aliens from Close Encounters. I like to think that the two stories are connected through them. Yoda kicks serious ass, great job with that sequence.

Ewan’s acting is the best, Hayden is good if a bit whiny. His transformation to the darkside (adolescence) is well-done. Jackson isn’t so limber with that light saber. Unfortunately, the whole series is plagued by unbelievably mediocre acting.
