Signs + Cloverfield = Super 8

Small-town father and son struggle to cope with the loss of wife and mother. Tormented father struggles with raising his son on his own. Suddenly, a monster threatens to destroy everything, forcing a deep father-son bond and allowing them both to find peace with the loss of wife and mother.

The monster looks quite a bit like the creature from Cloverfield, and even the action is shot in a similar way. Abrams really has a knack for monster movies. He’s probably this generation’s best.

Great performances by less than perfect-looking and amazingly genuine actors. The characters, along with the wonderful costumes and sets, create a really authentic late 70’s feel that destabilizes things even more.

The ending, with the spaceship, felt a bit cheesy somehow.
