Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Directed by Roland Emmerich

Starring Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Dash Mihok

Author

Pretty good, probably the perfect film for Emmerich to make. Light on story (every moment feels like a plot point) and character, but a grandiose stage for some really nice effects.

All of the effects are very real-looking, and the closing shot of the planet was spectacular. The Statue of Liberty shots with the waves and again with the ice crystals were pretty cool, an homage to (or rip-off from) Planet of the Apes. The tidal wave was one of the coolest effects, but what caused it? Would have been best to leave the wolves out altogether.

Gyllenhaal is refreshingly understated. Frankly, it seems like he’s above this kind of movie. Plummer as the all-knowing homeless guy almost ruins the movie.

Great music.
