Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Family Stone (2005)

Directed by Thomas Bezucha

Starring Claire Danes, Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney

Author

Lots of script problems. The story awkwardly bounces between comedy and drama and tragedy. How are we supposed to feel?

Unlikely relationships between characters aren’t flushed out, they just happen. Mom’s illness is handled sloppily. And references to things we haven’t seen indicate that the film may have been cut haphazardly.

Too many truly uncomfortable moments. The awkwardness isn’t funny in a Ben Stiller kind of way, it’s actually unpleasant.

All common pitfalls of a rookie director. It’s really amazing that a rookie director and a sloppy script attracted a cast of this caliber.

My eyes are drawn to McAdams every time she appears on screen. Wilson is magnetic as usual, the only redeeming character in the movie.

Despite all of the script and character problems, somehow the end was kinda touching.
