Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Natural (1984)

Directed by Barry Levinson

Starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger

Author

Another period piece by Levinson that’s a bit long and slow. Elements of Pride Of The Yankees, Eight Men Out, and Major League. Does every baseball movie have to have an underdog hero, goofy teammates, scrupulous owners, and an out-of-reach love interest?

Hobbs is a bit shady, so it’s hard to sympathize, making the story a bit unfulfilling. In fact, the only redeeming character in the whole film is Iris, and she just grazes the storyline. Would have been nice to have real athletes. Redford looks a bit like Brad Pitt, no?

Newman’s music rocks. Some romantic shots in there, but the film lacks polish.
