Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Out of Towners (1970)

Directed by Arthur Hiller

Starring Jack Lemmon, Sandy Dennis, Sandy Baron, Anne Meara

Author

Pretty funny for an older movie. There aren’t too many older movies with such sarcasm. A good road comedy, very much like Planes, Trains, & Automobiles.

Great writing by Simon, and except for a few especially theatrical moments, Lemmon delivers perfectly. He’s a master at combining voice, expression, and situation to produce comedy. His character is very similar to Grodin in Seems Like Old Times (which Simon also wrote) and Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. I suppose that makes Martin the logical choice for the 1999 remake. Dennis is beautifully annoying. Unfortunately, she loses her marvelous accent and breaks out in an English accent at the end of the movie.

A few notoriously 70’s filmmaking moments.
