Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Top Gun (1986)

Directed by Tony Scott

Starring Tom Cruise, Tim Robbins, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer

Author

Tony is the man. Graduated filters and a wonderfully energetic score really give the film a fantastic feel. The way that this thing is put together, the flying has an almost sexual energy to it, and of course the whole film has a thin layer of homoeroticism to it.

Drama between characters is authentic, dialogue is sharp. Wonderful cast and pretty good performances all around. A young tom Cruise, despite his crooked smile, exudes the perfect balance of machismo and charm. Skerritt, Ironside, and Tolkan were all made for this movie.

Those portrait-style credits are fantastic. Predator, which came out a year later, did the same thing. How come they don’t do that anymore? Maybe the weak characters in today’s movies would make those kinds of credits laughable?
