Definitely an unconventional Best Picture. Strong acting all around, for sure, but shouldn’t a Best Picture tell a larger story? Anora is about a young woman making a series of bad choices, and while she has moments of independence, integrity, and spunk along the way, she ultimately ends up worse off than where she started. Is the message in the end, really, that she feels worthless? Or worse, that she is worthless? All of this wrapped graphic sexual content. Shouldn’t a Best Picture strive for more?
Then there’s the mood and pacing. There are accents of dark comedy, but not enough of them, so they feel a bit out of place as the tone of what is clearly a somber, dramatic story is being established. And there are moments when things drag a bit and the story slows to a crawl.
Great performances all around. Mikey is impressive, and Eydelshteyn as Ivan is equally impressive. Borisov delivers a performance with quiet intensity not unlike Peter Stormare in Fargo, only with a little more heart.
