For a while, superhero films were shit. Superman was good, but then nothing until the late 90’s. And then X-Men, Spider-Man, and this. I guess the golden age of superhero movies had to wait for effects to catch up to the imaginations of comic book readers who are now breaking into Hollywood and making their own movies.
Very good at developing the Batman character. Strangely, there is very little showing Batman gathering a reputaion around town. Aside from a fleeting scene with a little boy watching him scale a wall, he has no fans, no skeptics. There is surprisingly little interaction with law enforcement and the press. These kinds of things are expected in superhero movies, and I think having these things would have really helped build the Batman legend in the film.
Pretty nice cast. Lots of English actors faking American accents. Bale is pretty good as Batman. He plays the complex Bruce Wayne very well. Neeson is great. Holmes is slightly annoying (and quite average-looking) in this one. Oldman must have hated playing someone so normal. Wilkinson was really good, too.
Effects, especially the Gotham landscapes, are nice.
