The Marvel movies I like best are the ones that are the most plausible, the ones that tell a fantastic story but remain connected to our real world. This one was a little too mystical and magical for me. The only thing connecting it to the real world are a brief scene in a Korean underground casino and a guy who is supposed to be a CIA agent. I have the same problem with the Thor movies. Sometimes, they’re just a little too out there.
The mysticism, tribal traditions, story of reverence, beautiful landscapes, and traditional African score give the whole thing a bit of a Lion King feel. Another scene with the princess tech guru fitting T’Challa with the latest gadgets seems lifted right out of a James Bond movie. There’s some decent action, but the special effects are layered on pretty thick. The combat scenes, in particular, are a little too fluid and polished.
A who’s who of black actors. Wright steals the show as the princess. Serkis is actually a pretty good actor. Too bad he’s painted over in most of his other roles.
I’m just tired of the superhero movies. As impressive as the Marvel universe is, all of the plot twists and interconnected stories and plotlines are too much to follow. Only the biggest superhero nerds have a true appreciation for it.
