I think this film set the stage for the big-budget entourage of American Indian films, like Dances With Wolves and Last of the Mohicans.
In the words of Larry Fascella, it successfully “transports you to another place and time.” A good representation of some Canadian history. There’s an awful lot of sex and blood, but I guess that’s how life was in those days.
The movie does a great job of giving the viewer empathy for the “alternative” protagonist, one who does not typify the traditional hero in film who gathers support from the audience at large through his popular beliefs and customs. Good, powerful music and great make-up.
