Gosling and Williams deliver nervous, uncomfortable performances. And it’s not just the characters that are destabilizing. Disjointed flashbacks of intensely emotional scenes, awkward editing, an ethereally chaotic score, ad libbing add to the mix. It’s obvious that this is what Cianfrance was going for, but that doesn’t mean it’s a joy to watch.
