The whole celebrity in prison thing was reminiscent of Chopper, the characters in the crazy house reminded me of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and the confessionals to the camera were similar to the ones in JCVD.
There’s no denying Hardy’s intensity. His performance is brutal and raw, and the movie is largely a vehicle for him. I just wish there was more story. Not a whole lot really happens to his character dramatically, and even when there are dramatic moments, his character is strangely detached from them. So it’s hard to root for this guy.
Photography and costumes and music and acting styles all evoke the 70’s and 80’s perfectly. But Refn spends too much time and energy stylizing the movie instead of pushing the story forward.
