Cleanly directed and very suspenseful. It’s all more powerful knowing that it’s a true story.
Hanks is good in a very real, very human role. He really shines in the film’s last few minutes. With a simmering ferocity in his eyes, Abdi is creepy and perfect. Photos of the real-life pirate also reveal that he was also perfectly casted. Abdirahman was particularly intense.
An interesting look at maritime shipping. Why the heck do these guys not carry guns when traveling through pirate-infested waters? Surely, there should be at least a couple of licensed officers on each ship, especially when traveling through this part of the world.
But the research I did after after watching this may have ruined things a bit. The movie is definitely dramatic, but by more than one account, he wasn’t like that in real life. Instead of being noble and respected and cautious, some who were on the ship with him claim that he was arrogant and reckless. We’re initially captivated by the fact that this all really happened, but then I feel like we’re being duped by dramatic embellishments to character and story.
