The plane crash was horrifyingly fantastic, the long takes and silence on the island helps create a sense of isolation.
Hanks is good, giving the the movie the most subtle touch of comedy. His physical transformation is remarkable.
Zemeckis has always been a pioneer of CGI, but a few effects here look a bit dated.
