Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

There’s a very smooth flow to the story. Acting and dialogue are all very natural, and the characters are appealing and friendly. The problem is that everyone is too nice, everything is too perfect. In a single movie, we have the best ex-wife, the best ex-wife’s ex-husband, the best friend, and the best son ever.

The problem is that there’s no real drama, no conflict. I kept waiting for the ex-wife to turn nasty, for the friend to steal the truck, or for the son to die in a tragic grease fire accident, but it never happened. As director and star, Favreau really played it safe, and I’m not sure why. He has an edge. I’ve seen it.

And I’m not sure why it is marketed as a comedy. Except for one great line about hush puppies, it’s not very funny. If anything, it’s an interesting exploration of the importance of marketing and social media.

Fabulous food photography. A good movie for foodies. Might be Oliver Platt’s least annoying performance.
