A brutal retribution story with intensely dramatic scenes strung together at just the right pace. Typical of his style, Tarantino whimsically transitions between comedy and tension and brutality. In any given scene, you never know what you’re going to get. The only thing you know for sure is that things are slowly building for a mind-blowingly brutal ending.
Tarantino coaxes great performances out of big-name actors. Foxx, Waltz, DiCaprio, and Jackson are all brilliant. Waltz’s calm and courteous articulation in scenes of great tension make him a perfect choice for Tarantino scenes.
The movie is polished and carefully crafted. Pacing and photography are good.
My only criticism is the scene of slaves walking to the beat of rap music. It took me out of the moment. Also didn’t quite understand why the normally rational and intelligent Schultz would decide to shoot Candie and endanger everyone’s life. It set up the requisite Tarantino ending, but I didn’t think it was properly motivated.
