Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Ed Wood (1994)

Directed by Tim Burton

Starring Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette

Author

Another good collaboration between Burton and Depp. A bit long, not enough of a significant story, just a bio of a kooky character. Very well-made, as are all Burton films. All his films are very similar in style, making him a true auteur. A whimsical but carefully structured story with interesting characters placed in a very visual, perfect storybook environment, with simple melodic themes, eerie choral music, and perfect, cartoon-like cinematography and camerawork.

Good acting all around. Depp was good. He had cool hair, and I liked the way he talked. Landau is fantastic. Well-acted and hilarious. Worthy of an Oscar nomination. Arquette seems to have established herself as the character who always falls in love with losers. It’s lonely guys like me who love her performances most. Murray seemed a bit stale, probably because I kept expecting some comedy from him. He should have done more comedy. D’Onofrio was good as Welles. But that Criswell introduction wasn’t so good.

That red/green dress moment was pretty funny. Nice tie-up explanations at the end, giving it a real history. Not sure exactly what Burton was trying to say about the worst director in history.
