I appreciate the motivated backstory for Furiosa, but her story as an adult feels a bit thin. The movie leans heavily on quirkiness, action, and style, often at the expense of deeper storytelling.
Great action sequences with what looks like some great stunts, though I can’t tell which ones are real. There’s an awful lot of CGI, everything is heavily color-graded, there are flashes of Miller’s distinctive under cranking. The constant lean on action and visuals at the expense of story gives this movie a bit of Zack Snyder disease.
Perfect casting and performance by Alyla Browne as young Furiosa, with amazing VFX work to blend her face with the grown Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy has the look and presence, but her slight frame makes some of the more brutal action scenes less convincing. Hemsworth pretty good, stepping out of his usual persona with something fresh. Burke didn’t entirely win me over with his Michael Madsen energy, but he ultimately delivers a very specific and successful performance as the understated but strong and mostly noble Praetorian Jack.
The film is faithful to the Mad Max franchise, and I’m excited to see more, but this is one of the weaker installments.
