I liked the first Godzilla in Legendary’s MonsterVerse a lot more. This one got a bit silly, and now I’m a bit worried about the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong.
A very thin story with lots of strange and stupid plot leaps. Titans make hurricanes? And not just any hurricanes, category 6 hurricanes. OK. Oxygen Destroyer? Nice name. It’s established that Godzilla is dead, and then he’s alive? Convenient. They have to go to Antarctica, so they get there in three seconds. Nice. The sub happens to have a craft that fits a man who can carry around a nuclear weapon that is operated by a keypad? OK. Fenway Park loudspeakers can send sound around world? Sure. They know exactly how to fix a piece of broken electronics outside in a hurricane? Right.
I really like Chandler, but is he a lead? Every shot shows him looking angry or overwhelmed. Zhang Ziyi has an alien beauty, but why is she in this film? Brown is as good as she could have been with this script. Uninspired, corny dialogue doesn’t help anyone. In the end, I don’t really care about any of these characters.
Really great monster effects, a few beautiful photographic snapshots nice shots (the cross/mountain shot of Ghidorah, Mothra’s luminescent wings, Ghidorah’s electrified wings, and the closing shot of Godzilla), but the whole “emerging from clouds” thing gets old. Nice sound effects for the creatures and weapons.
How many people died in this movie, 100 million?
