Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

In the Name of the Father (1993)

Directed by Jim Sheridan

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Pete Postlethwaite, Alison Crosbie, Philip King

Author

Lewis is pretty good. Postlethwaite’s got a cool look. So did the bomber. He just looked evil and smart, like villains should. It’s nice to see Emma Thompson, but it’s almost distracting to see her in such a minor role. I would have liked to see much more of her.

A cross between Blown Away (looking for the mad bomber) and Shawshank Redemption (innocent is impisoned and assaulted before becoming respected). The story’s not bad, but there’s not much of an arc to it. I wish they would have showed Lewis and Postlethwaite truly bonding a lot more than they did. It would have made his loss much more significant and the story much more dramatic. It’s a good thing this is actually a true story, because fake stories with this much detail in such a specific time and place in history just wouldn’t work.

Neat hearing the U2 music at the intro, but it was distracting. I’d love to hear U2 actually score a film rather than just make pop songs for them.
