Donnie Yen is fantastic. A stoic, engaging performance, and the guy can really move. A perfect example of how understated heroes are always the most interesting. Siu-Wong Fan and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi are bad-ass villains.
Wonderful kung fu with some real impacts. Well-shot and edited, this martial arts action is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Great attention to sets and costuming, and a nice score to match. Polished direction by Wilson Yip. It’s no surprise there were sequels.
The story is large, dramatic, and nicely paced. Not sure it needed to end with a Bruce Lee reference, though. Takes something away from the greatness of the film’s hero.
Kind of a strange name for a movie. I now realize that part of the guy’s name was Man, but in English, the title reads like a goofy superhero flick. “Fist of Eternal Spring”, a literal translation of Wing Chun, might have been a cooler title.
