A slow, creepy, suspenseful build that feels like a Shyamalan or Peele production. But the reveal is excruciatingly slow, and despite the promise early on, the payoff is not there in the end.
Great cast. Roberts exudes tension and discomfort beautifully. How has Ethan Hawke never been pressured to fix his teeth in this day and age? I wonder why Denzel dropped out. Did he realize that this would be a disaster? Dialogue needed a little work.
Silky, destabilizing camera movements, but there are way too many of them. A few of them are interesting, but when every dramatic scene features them, enough is enough. The space shots were pretty, but were they necessary? Were they meant to suggest that this chaos might be extraterrestrial in nature?
So many loose ends and unanswered questions. In the end, Esmail was probably trying to make a clever statement with the Friends episode and how it’s probably best to let the world burn and just do whatever makes you happy. But all of that is mighty unsatisfying.
