Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Directed by Roberto Benigni

Starring Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giorgio Cantarini, Giustino Durano

Author

Nice story. Mixes comedy with drama quite effectively, like Signs.

The most fascinating thing to see, I think, is watching someone who is always funny trying to deal with a serious situation. I would have liked to see Benigni get even more serious, and to see things get even more tragic. It would have made the funny stuff even funnier and heart-warming.

Benigni’s got it. He’s the star, everyone else is pretty lame. Sweet to cast his wife, but I’m not sure that she was the best choice. Somehow she didn’t fit the part and her acting sucked.

Interesting that Benigni, who is not Jewish, would make a film about the Holocaust.

While watching this movie, I learned that you cannot try to eat while watching a foreign film. If you take your eyes off the subtitles for just a minute, you’re lost.
