Coppola delivers a contemplative, emotional, and truly enjoyable experience. This movie has all of my favorite things: characters who are real and unique and interesting, an emotional story of real growth, long takes and a droning score that really draw you in. The essence of Japan, from its dazzling city streets to its quiet temples, is beautifully captured on film. Aside from some minor focus issues, it’s beautifully shot. And it’s unexpectedly funny, with subtle humor and Japanese quirkiness lurking around every corner.
Not for one second do the actors feel like they are performing. Casting is great, and everyone’s performance is just right, and there is real chemistry there. Murray is that magic that pulls it all together.
One of the few movies that I liked a lot more the second time I watched it.
