The tragic, downward spiral of broken love and divorce. A wonderfully tragic illustration of how getting courts involved can make things expensive and ugly very quickly. If there’s a better movie about divorce, I haven’t seen it. Cynical name for the title.
Good drama, painful to watch. The scene where he is served the papers is especially tense. The slightest touch of comedy helps to lighten the mood slightly, could have used a bit more of that.
Driver and Johansson are regular people turning in vulnerable performances and impressively long takes. With that haircut and no make-up, Johansson has gone full Christopher Walken. Driver can sing, but I’m not sure how I feel about that extended, overly theatrical solo. Liotta and Dern are both fantastic.
Is this meant to take place in the early 90’s? It’s not obvious, but it does feel a touch dated.
