The Killer (1989)
So violent it’s funny. The action just keeps on coming. A few unbelievably crazy shootout scenes. The body count had to be a record. They shot people five times in the stomach, chest, and head before they were convinced they were dead. Predictably, the characters found themselves running out of…
Full ReviewLetter to the Next Generation (1990)
The oversexuality of women and 80’s materialism and apathy, with a focus on the May 4th incident. I don’t see the connection, the point he is trying to make, or the message for the next generation. Kind of interesting and well-made, but it drags on at times. Good use of…
Full ReviewLoverboy (1989)
Perhaps the last of the great 80’s comedies. Dempsey was perfect. What the hell happened to his career? Great supporting cast.
Full ReviewThe Nasty Girl (1990)
Odd. Unpleasantly odd. It’s kind of like 1984, in that it deals with the present trying to recreate the past to suit the needs of the government.
Full ReviewChristmas Vacation (1989)
The franchise is starting to lose it’s lustre. Many of the same characters and actors, but let’s face it, none of the wit and charm of the first two moves. The quality writing and Chevy’s comic timing are gone. It was around this time that a) funny scripts stopped going…
Full ReviewParenthood (1989)
Howard manages to pack in almost every awkward family situation into one story seamlessly. Great performances from a great cast. Funny and touching at the same time, like a John Hughes film. Perhaps Howard’s best.
Full ReviewSay Anything (1989)
A pretty cute 80’s movie. Kinda goofy but kinda charming. Cusack is good. He’s pretty funny, kinda charming, and got some cool lips and eyes. So was the guy who played the father.
Full ReviewSea of Love (1989)
Pretty good. Fabulous cast. Pacino is great. I think the movie would have done a little better with a darker, less sappy title. I managed to avoid the film for a few years just because I thought it would be a cheesy love story.
Full Reviewsweetie (1989)
Very artistic, but I’m not sure how. It carried an eerie plotlessness throughout, and it remarkably conveyed emotion with the shallow plot it had. Some pretty funny and well-developed characters, and some really funny moments. And I could have sworn the Dad was Ted Williams.
Full ReviewUncle Buck (1989)
John Hughes and John Candy show what a great combo they can be. Hughes uses the same great comedy and touching ending he used in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. And it works great. Martin is good, and this might be Candy’s best performance. And this is probably the only movie…
