A contemplative exploration of the tragic beauty of life. Vintage Wenders.
Like the guy’s life, the film moves at a gentle, deliberate pace, though it feels a bit slow at times. If the message is simply to appreciate every day above ground, I’m not sure we needed to watch a man clean toilets for two hours to fully grasp it. Impressionistic, black-and-white dream sequences are classic Wenders, adding an additional poetic layer to the film.
A closer look at the story raises some questions. The guy is clearly a kind, respectful, and disciplined man who finds comfort in routine, rituals, and his love of trees. But why doesn’t he speak? He’s not shy, and it’s not a speech issue. And how is it that everyone so readily accepts him? In this country, a man who doesn’t talk is a creep.
