Some of the new footage indeed adds some humanity, but at the cost of some of the old footage, editing, pacing. Despite an honest effort to preserve the integrity of the story, things didn’t flow quite as well in this one as in the original.
Drago has slightly more dialogue, but not enough to really make any difference to his character. Some subtle “inner voice” dialogue during the fight is added for Rocky, which is interesting, but it happens just once in the movie (and the only time in the whole Rocky franchise) which makes it seem awkward.
All in all, this is not a better movie than the original, perhaps slightly worse. The re-release really cleaned things up, making it look like it was shot yesterday.
