Nice effects, really nice effects, but I nearly didn’t make it past the opening credits. Would much prefer to ease into all of that visual craziness.
Combine that kind of start with the dizzying timelines, universes, characters, and it’s hard to latch onto anything emotionally. Once things settle down, genuine investment and empathy for the characters start to emerge.
In the end, this is an epic achievement in animation. Every frame is a masterpiece, and the level of expression captured, particularly in the faces, is astonishing. Was this purely hand-animated, or did it use some kind of live face capture? Either way, it’s remarkably nuanced. Spot’s physicality is especially noteworthy. He doesn’t move like a typical villain, instead offering an awkward yet confident presence that adds a fresh dynamic. Great cast of voices. The film also offers a beautifully creative, fun, and sensitive exploration of ethnicity and culture, something rarely seen in the superhero genre.
Remarkably unified coming from multiple directors, which is usually risky. There must have been a real commitment to collaboration, a strong shared vision, and real creative harmony.
Cruel cliffhanger ending.
