Not sure if this was a fluke for Emmerich or if he is actually improving as a filmmaker. He should be commended for his choice of script, cast, and photography. A powerful, well-made movie, perhaps the best Revolutionary War movie ever made. Deliciously and realistically bloody. The period was in many ways as treacherous as the Holocaust. An interesting look at war politics.
A few well-placed metaphors, and the light humor worked perfectly.
Mel was really good and can be compared to his similar character in Braveheart. (And strangely enough, it struck me for the first time how similar Mel Gibson’s demeanor is to Meg Ryan’s.) Isaacs was a terrific villain. Susan was precious.
I’m glad they called it The Patriot and not something predictably dumb like The Ghost. A few Last of the Mohicans-ish shots.
