Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Patton (1970)

Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner

Starring George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Young, Michael Strong

Author

Epic in length and scope, but unfortunately the story is a little boring.

Scott commits to the role, but he plays a character who is not very redeeming. Scott is known as one of the great actors, but he doesn’t have a great body of film work. That makes it hard to assess this performance. Is this his best work? Is this the only type of character he can play? What range does he have as an actor?

At the time of the film’s release, the war action was probably the best ever shot. Some dangerous-looking stunts are a big part of that. Animals were definitely harmed during the making of this film.

Schaffner proves that Planet of the Apes was not a fluke. The man can direct. Goldsmith’s score is pretty good, too.
