Something different. Strange sense of nostalgia here, perhaps because of the emphasis on writing, long takes, minimal editing, and a single set. It feels simple, intimate, and theatrical. It takes good writing to sustain interest on the story on such a small set, and this film’s got it. This easily works as a stage play.
Beautifully shot almost entirely within a small apartment, the close quarters heighten both the intimacy and the claustrophobia, not unlike the cramped tension of 12 Angry Men or the sense of confinement in Hitchcock’s Rear Window. Visual motifs of windows and mirrors are a smart and further Hitchcockian.
Wilde does an outstanding job directing herself as the high-strung, anxious wife. Rogen’s good at the drama, which gives his handful of funny lines even more punch.
