The guy is passionate about movies. I wonder how many of today’s directors have this kind of passion for and familiarity with the classics. Should have been required viewing in film school.
I like how personal it is, and I love Scorsese’s unique, fast-talking narration. But a camera fixated on super close-ups of his face sends a weird message. Is this about the movies, or is this about him? The handwritten, scratchy graphics are also overly long and a bit weird. I would have happily ditched those for little graphics to tell us what film clip we were viewing or who was being interviewed.
Why did so many of these old directors have eyepatches, by the way? The guy with the patch and monocle and cigarette was awesome. Who was that?
A massive editing effort, and I have no idea how much work it must have been to secure the rights for all those movie clips. How did Scorsese have time for this?
