Lightning Jack (1994)

Hogan’s still coasting on Crocodile Dundee. Cuba never gets the chance to open his mouth and be annoying and is pleasantly tolerable.

Baraka (1992)

A brave, unflinching, meditative portrait of the world. Definitely chill, but you get into it after a bit. Was there supposed to be a message from the order in which the images were shown? A definite focus on old culture, mostly Asian. Was this intentional, given they make up the…

No Country for Old Men (2007)

With unflinching violence and little score, the no bullshit, gritty approach makes this Texas story very real and engaging. The 1980 setting, and the authenticity of it, makes things that much creepier. But not a single person in the theater thought it was going to end when it did, and…

Beowulf (2007)

Quite an accomplishment, it seems. The CGI characters are jarring and disappointing at first, with their dead eyes and “too smooth” movement, but you get used to them. There seems to be an argument that there is no reason to have done the entire film in CGI, and I might…

Popeye (1980)

Awful in so many ways. I even remember hating it as a kid. Williams was lucky to get work after this. A perfect movie for Duvall. She can be as crappy and annoying and skinny as she wants, and she fits the roll perfectly.

Ring of Fire (1991)

A mediocre IMAX film. The on-field baseball footage was very cool (let’s see an IMAX baseball documentary already!), but the “cultural” stuff from Indonesia was a waste.

Game 6 (2005)

The Red Sox game footage was more interesting than any other part of the movie, unfortunately.

Disturbia (2007)

LaBoeuf is a talent. If the neighbor was a little bit cuter, they might have really had something here. The horribly vicious car accidents at the beginning accident seem a bit dramatic if they only served as a plot point to keep him in the house.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

Like a Christopher Guest film, only this one takes the fringe subject matter seriously. Or does it? Reviews suggest the film is “hilarious”. If these gamers are in fact real people, I wonder how they feel about everyone laughing at them. Either way, it’s interesting, entertaining, and well-made. Mitchell and…
