Small Soldiers (1998)

Fun to count how many other movies they copy, most blatantly Terminator. If the copying doesn’t bother you, the cookie-cutter storyline will. Fabulous guest voices, though. Neat getting the Dirty Dozen cast back together.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)

A mixture of “laugh at the 70’s” comedy, bad oddball humor, and gross humor. The gross humor seemed just gross and not humorous. Frankly, there were a few things I really didn’t need to see. The staged outtakes were horrible. Dillon was miscast, I think. His character just didn’t work.…

The Thin Red Line (1998)

Supposedly, Mallick shot over a million feet of film for this movie. I think most of it made its way into the final cut. Excruciatingly long and slow. An impressionaistic look at the philosophy and hypocrisy of war. War poetry. No comparison to Saving Private Ryan. They are both totally…

The Truman Show (1998)

With Carrey, I expected unbridled silliness. What I got was an interesting drama and witty satire about life and television from Peter Weir. Carrey completely nails it (dare I say Oscar-worthy?), with the perfect combination of underacting and a hint of comedy. Laura Linney as Meryl was also great and…

Urban Legend (1998)

Cheesy horror with just enough shock crap for me not to like it.

Very Bad Things (1998)

Really, really dark comedy, probably the darkest I’ve seen. Very funny. I have never seen someone get hit by a car so hard and so squarely. There were a few times when it got a bit silly, but it always recovered. I just love the comedy of victimization, the joy…

What Dreams May Come (1998)

A bit disjointed. Flashbacks of normal life from a strange environment, like A Thin Red Line. Same alternate reality thing going on as in The Matrix. The photography rivals Orlando. Love the color effects, but it’s kinda gay that they come from a painting. Intersting that it was shot on…

Your Friends & Neighbors (1998)

Any movie based on voyeuristic looks at almost every possible awkward sexual moment is going to be interesting. A lot like a play, like Secrets and Lies: only a few characters, only a few settings. Good acting for the most part. Patric was good, a lot like Mike Romig. Strange…

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Can’t slight the story, since Bill wrote it, but it *is* poorly executed. Horrible acting, and even worse writing. The comedy rarely works. The unimpressive but professional score almost overpowers the amateurishness of the movie. I did like the poem though. Cameron is annoying. How can we possibly sympathize for…

American Beauty (1999)

Touching, with a lot of important messages. Good writing. Acting and casting is perfect all-around. Spacey and Bentley are fantastic, Bening is annoyingly perfect. Spacey’s subtley, sarcasm, and timing are impeccable. He’s perhaps the funniest actor of the 90’s. His character reminds me of Broderick in Election. Heather Sher? Neat…
