Pi (1998)

Pretty interesting, engaging at times. That 216/self-awareness/God thing was a bit hard to swallow, but the rest was pretty good. What was the point of the movie? A call to appreciate life as it is rather than to try defining it? Like most student or cheap indie films, sloppy (or…

The Players Club (1998)

The comedy is very reminiscent of Friday. Let’s face it: Ice Cube is a funny guy. A nice mix of silly comedy, a fun story to carry it, and great characters. Virtually the same cast as Friday. LisaRaye is beautiful at times and weird-looking at others.

Pleasantville (1998)

Works on many levels, a real thinker. Similar to the “what else is out there in TV land” Truman Show premise. Nice story, and nice use of effects. Just wish we could have somehow bypassed the silly “fighting for the remote control” time warp that set this wonderful story into…

The Prince of Egypt (1998)

Cleared up a lot of history that I wasn’t too sure about. Learned more about Jewish traditions than I ever did at a Passover Ceder. A great springboard for religious conversation. On the way home from the movie, Melissa caught me up on 3000 years of theology. Aside from the…

Ronin (1998)

A story about unrelated criminals who gather to commit a common crime, not too different from Reservoir Dogs. And the whole story revolved around a case with unknown but extremely valuable contents, like Pulp Fiction. Weird. A simple story with lots of neat twists and developments. Nice and long. All…

Rush Hour (1998)

A pretty good action movie with a good story and some great lines. Tucker’s really funny. It’s amazing, for a young guy who’s just breaking into comedy, his identity is so defined. He’s got the voice, the eyes, the lines, and the “I’m a Black bad-ass” angle on everything. Tucker’s…

Rushmore (1998)

Schwartzman was entertaining, not bad for his first gig. What a bloodline. Murray’s also pretty good. Similar student-principal relationship as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Magnus and his Scottish accents were pretty damn funny, too. Playfully made. A few noticeably bad cuts.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

The war movie to end all war movies. A truly humbling experience. It really opens your eyes to the atrocities of war, and I would go so far as to say that it could even be powerful enough to prevent a war in real life. I’ve heard rumors that there…

Senseless (1998)

Goofy. Marlon is probably the funniest Wayans brother, but the comedy is still hard to stomach. The hockey goalie scene was great.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Well-directed. The timing of the shots and pacing of the story was nice, and the art direction was fantastic. Nice cast. Paltrow was good, Rush was excellent, and it was nice seeing Jim Carter from Top Secret back on the screen. I loved the Queen’s quote that “theater can’t teach…
