Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Last Emperor (1987)

Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci

Starring John Lone, Joan Chen, Peter O'Toole, Ruocheng Ying

Author

Long. A bit convuluted and hard to follow at times. Perhaps I don’t know ebough about the history of china, and most people who awtch this film do? Is it fair to expect that of viewers?

Whose story is it? O’Toole’s or the Emperors? Or the empress? It wavers. The emporer makes a poor protagonist because he is mostly a victim of circumstance. It’s difficult to support a main character who does not control their destiny.

Lone is pretty good, Chen is hot! I wonder if Lone is happy with his career, and if being Asian has held him back. The kids who played the young emperor were great.

Everyone spoke English, and that alost ruined it. Subtitles would have really made things more authentic. The scenery and music is beautiful and sets the mood nicely, but it’s not enough to make the movie.

The ending was poignant but a bit weak for an epic of this length.
