Pretty believable period piece, but the story is a bit cheeseball.
The stock characters and stock acting don’t help. Chlumsky is OK but too cute, too eloquent, and too charming. All characters, even kids, have to have an edge to be interesting. Culkin is mildly charming. Aykroyd does OK in a dramatic role. The familiar, friendly, and always grounded Curtis somehow adds some legitimacy to an otherwise shaky cast.
