Starts off with a creepy guy being creepy, but the tension builds nicely and it all unfolds into something pretty heavy. A quality production.
Gyllenhaal convincingly plays a sadistic genius. His cold stare and speech inflections are a nice touch. This is definitely a Gyllenhaal vehicle, but the creepiness of his character and the story might exclude him from Oscar consideration. Russo has distractingly had a bit of work done, but her supporting performance is strong. Paxton’s not horrible, though it amazes me that, after all these years, he still doesn’t understand dramatic beats or pauses when delivering dialogue. Ahmed is really great.
