Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Directed by Stuart Rosenberg

Starring Paul Newman, George Kennedy, J.D. Cannon, Lou Antonio

Author

Heavy on character and dialogue and with limited sets, this one definitely feels novelesque or theatrical. Like a lot of movies before the 80’s, not much happens. The climax of the movie is Luke eating eggs? Or Luke digging a ditch?

Parallels with The Shawshank Redemption. Prisoner wins over the other prisoners, befriends one specifically, and then escapes. Newman kind of gives the same sort of soft-spoken, smart performance that Robbins gave. Lou Antonio (Koko) in this one reminds me a lot of Gil Bellows (Tommy) in Shawshank.

A few times, you can hear that awful foley sound they used in 70’s movies when people fell to the ground.
