Bird made a name for himself making some great animated features, and his adventurous style really comes through. Brilliant visuals, whimsical camerawork, fun editing, easy performances by good-looking people. Unfortunately, it can be a little awkward making a live-action movie with the same sort of whim. There are moments, like the robot agent chase, when things just seem a bit childish. Overall, I wish there was a little less silly, a little more real comedy, and a little more drama. The story’s a little drawn out and convoluted. And there are moments when it really feels like a commercial for Disneyland.
Decent performances, but it’s hard to shine when things aren’t very dramatic. Thomas Robinson is particularly good, perhaps because his segment had the most meat to it. Britt is a sweetheart.
Giacchino’s score was reminiscent of, but not as good as, Isham’s score from Eight Below.
